Belief: “Hallelujah” by Tori Kelly.
Believing is to have faith in God knowing you’re not alone. Faith gives meaning to the joys and struggles in life. “Hallelujah” is a song that I think resembles this, despite the struggles there’s still trust in Him. I also think the song resembles the journey during the relationship between God and yourself, the effort. (I also personally like Tori Kelly’s version just a little bit better).
Independence: “Wild Things” by Alessia Cara.
To be independent is to have freedom from authority. The path of independence is to separate themselves from the religion but still believing in God. “Wild Things” I think represents the inner battles between wanting that independence with their life (“beating to their own drum”) but also feeling the gray areas of having that relationship that can be as fragile as eggshells. Each person feels differently about different aspects of the church and decide to venture on their own whatever that may be. I feel like this song can represent self finding.
Exploration: “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield.
Exploration is a part of human nature which can be seen all throughout history. However, to explore faith and religion is again, different for each individual. Whatever feels like “home” and normalcy is unique. “Unwritten” is all about a blank page, being willing to experience new things, explore our life with arms wide open. We all have the capability to form our life and spirituality however that might mean, it’s an individual journey.
Confusion: “Fix a Heart” by Demi Lovato.
This was the most difficult song for me to choose. Being confused can mean so many different things, can affect people in so many ways along with how we cope with our confusion. Whether you are exploring, questioning, or rejecting your faith or simply just trying to see where your relationship stands it is all based on personal experiences. “Fix a Heart” talks about not knowing where to start when it comes to pain, and I believe there is pain when you’re confused about your relationship with God. Wherever you come out after the confusion will forever change your own personal journey as this song describes however, whatever the result is it should be noted it’s what He thinks is best for us.
Disbelief: “Let Me Down Slowly” by Alec Benjamin.
Questioning the truth of God I think crosses the mind of many at some point in their life if not more. Intellect and blindly trusting come head to head and this can create another personal war. At times it can feel as if you’re alone. “Let Me Down Slowly” I believe reflects how people feel when they’re in disbelief. Life feels cold and emotions like anger or sadness can come up thoughts of being let down arise. It can feel as if everything is spiraling but I believe disbelief has to happen for each relationship to be strengthened.
Return: “Light Me Up – Encore” by Hunter Hayes.
Though each relationship is unique through life experiences, our faith as a child versus our faith as a wiser adult will be different. Despite the anger we may feel because of these life experiences we can be blinded and not realize that He was with us the whole time. “Light Me Up” reflects the same emotion as the importance of having a relationship with God. The ferris wheel in the empty field sitting alone to being back to full of life, electricity, and energy is the same as each person. I hear many times the feeling of finding God again from those who have felt lost and they way they speak is the same as message of this song.
